Project Overview
Funds were raised to produce 1,000 reusable sanitary pads by the Days for Girls Enterprise in Toliara, Madagascar. The Episcopal Diocese of Toliara has set up a Days for Girls Enterprise in Toliara in their Women’s Centre which houses sewing machines and other necessary equipment. Many women have been trained to make these patented reusable sanitary kits and the project leader educates women and girls about menstruation health and hygiene
These sanitary pads were delivered to the NGO, MedAir, in Antananarivo, in preparation for their crisis response to women and girls affected during the coming cyclone season as part of the emergency WASH projects that will be rolled out.
The kits were then distributed to cyclone-stricken women and girls in Maroantsetra and Morondava, following the devastation brought by Cyclone Cheneso in February 2023. The kit contained a bar of soap, underwear, and washable sanitary napkins. Apart from distributing the dignity kits, Medair held an awareness session to break the taboos on menstruation and increase awareness of menstrual hygiene practices between women and school girls.
