Supporting the Community

Meet Charis who came to help us from the Northern Ireland.
“I had an incredible time volunteering through the I61 Foundation. The team’s unwavering support and kindness made the experience truly memorable. Engaging with the community and assisting local children in honing their skills was both fulfilling and inspiring. This opportunity allowed me to contribute positively while learning valuable lessons along the way.”

Clearing the Grounds

For this experience my group of 10 went to help clean and clear out the site of a school. They help educate and encourage people who are disabled between the ages of 5 to 16 depending on their disability. They work with people with a range of disabilities and have different classes to help organise themselves.

Our first task was weeding the edges of the yard and cleaning out the unwanted plants that sprouted between the bricks. We then moved on to more clearing out. This included not only picking up trash, including bottles, cards, cloths and plastics, but also cleaning the garden and removing unhealthy parts of growing plants. Although simple, it took quite a few hours to clear out the front area and, by the end of it, we had a very large pile of rubbish and other things that needed to be thrown out. Working with friends made it fun and all the more efficient as we were able to help each other and share techniques that made the work a lot more efficient. Often we would switch tasks, ensuring that no one was always doing the hardest task and also that we each undertook a variety of tasks allowing us to individually build our skills without disregarding the advantages of having a team – LBIS Student

Weekly Volunteering at KRN’s Children’s Literacy Program

As a volunteer at Kolektif Rivier Nwar, I had the opportunity to help children living locally with their English reading and writing skills. This included helping them with phonics, reading basic words, reading comprehension and writing stories. It was a very rewarding experience, and I really enjoyed spending time with the children and watching them improve over the weeks I was there. It’s a great project and of real value to the local community – Mae Mcginley

Kolektif Rivier Nwar Literacy Volunteer

Ella has been spending time helping the children of Black River village with their English literacy skills. She has been teaching them how to read and write in English, as well as helping them with phonics. Ella enjoys helping others and really enjoyed teaching the children.

This experience has given Ella a chance to use her skills and knowledge to help the children gain a better understanding of the basics of the English language. The children attending the program benefit from these lessons and they will help prepare them for their future.

Supporting the Sun Kids After School Project

For their CAS Project at Le Bocage International School, Hannah, Selma and Faye helped with the Sun Kids After School Education Program at Ti Rayons Soleil. Going weekly meant they developed a relationship with the teachers and the children, making their time volunteering even more enjoyable.

The Good Shop – August 2021

The Good Shop was tasked with clearing out a 1000 square meter space in an old textile factory in Floreal in order to save the maximum number of reusable items from ending up in the landfill. Volunteers were kept busy moving furniture and factory items, cleaning out the factory and preparing the space for the new Good Shop workshop.

Oak Helps Out at Kolektif Rivier Nwar

The 18th of July is marked as Nelson Mandela Day. This day is to commemorate the 67 years Nelson Mandela fought for justice and equality. It is also to encourage people to embrace these democratic values and work toward a more just and equitable society themselves by donating 67 minutes of their time to a chosen charity or community service.

A team of enthusiastic volunteers from Oak (Mauritius) joined the leaders at Kolektif Rivier Nwar (KRN) to assist with the children’s literacy program, administration and provide snacks and meals to those in need.

The project was greatly appreciated by all the children and those involved.
