UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Project Overview

Since 2020, Not A Number has been delivering in-custody workshops as part of its reintegration programmes. During 2023, a total of 134 workshops, were delivered by our small team to over 100 detainees at Petit Verger Prison, Richelieu Open Prison, and Women’s Prison. In addition to this, 20 trainees completed a 130-hour MITD masonry course during 2023 at Petit Verger Prison. In order to better support these activities moving forward, the NGO is seeking to renovate the classroom space at Petit Verger Prison and replace the old tables and chairs, which are no longer in a decent condition.

Description of Project

Not A Number would like to replace the existing items with a set of sturdy folding plastic chairs and tables, sufficient for the groups sizes that they work with. In addition, they would like to make some aesthetic improvements to the classroom by repainting the walls. They believe that by improving the physical conditions in this way, it will have a number of positive benefits:

  1. Participants will be able to sit comfortably for the 1–2 hours that each workshop normally lasts, which is not the case at present.
  2. The facilitators of the workshops will have more flexibility in how to split participants into smaller groups or alter the arrangement of seating for the learning components. At present, it is in a fixed u-shape position without other options.
  3. Creating a more decent and uplifting space contributes to better engagement and a positive learning atmosphere in the programme, a space which reflects the aims of the programme – to support detainees in working towards a positive future for themselves, and for the rest of society.

For the painting of the room, Not A Number staff will volunteer their time and also seek to involve detainees from the group in the process.

Objectives of the Project
  1. Replace existing tables with new, more mobile tables, that can be folded away to create more space if needed (sufficient for approximately 20 participants plus NGO staff and MPS officer).
  2. Replace existing chairs with new, uniform design chairs, that can be folded away and adapted to different group sizes as needed (sufficient for approximately 20 participants plus NGO staff and MPS officer)
  3. Repaint wall surfaces with a more contemporary and uplifting design, perhaps with some inspiring phrases or mural elements.
