UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Project Overview

Etoile du Berger is a non-governmental organization in Mauritius that provides safe shelter, care, and support to vulnerable children referred by the Child Development Unit (CDU). They currently care for teenage girls referred by the CDU, who are presently accommodated in a rented house in Roche Brunes. To ensure their long-term safety, stability, and closer supervision, they plan to build a dedicated residential house for them within their main care compound at Beau Bassin. This new facility will provide a secure and nurturing environment for the girls, while also creating space to welcome and support more children in need, in the future.

Description of Project

Etoile du Berger currently provides residential care for children from 5 – 18 years old, referred to them by the CDU. The boys and  girls from 5 – 11 years of age are homed in their residential facility in La Confiance, Beau Bassin, where their main residential care is currently established. The teenage girls presently reside in a rented house in Roche Brunes and the teenage boys in Albion. However, through this project, the plan is to construct a dedicated residential facility for the girls at La Confiance, and eventually the boys too in a later stage.

The new house will be built within the same compound as the existing residential care home. This will allow Etoile du Berger to:

  • Guarantee the girls’ safety and security.
  • Provide closer supervision and monitoring.
  • Ensure that the children benefit from better integration with their main residential facilities and staff support.
  • Through this initiative, they aim to provide the girls with a stable, secure, and nurturing environment that promotes their growth, well-being, and future development.
Expected Impact
  1. To provide safe residential care and daily basic needs (shelter, food, clothing, healthcare) for 7 girls aged 10–17 who have endured gross neglect and are at risk.
  2. To bring siblings together that may otherwise be separated due to their age, and encourage responsibility of the older girls with the younger children.
  3. To ensure 100% school attendance and improved academic performance through access to formal education, learning support, and provision of school materials.
  4. To strengthen psychological well-being, ensuring each girl receives regular therapeutic support and demonstrates healthier coping mechanisms.
  5. To foster life skills, responsibility, and self-esteem by engaging all 7 girls in structured extracurricular, mentorship, and personal development activities.
  6. Reduction in logistic and transport costs and time.
