Project Overview

Odysseo@ZEP Schools and Rodrigues is a marine education program run by the Odysseo Marine Foundation that brings ocean learning to children who would otherwise never have access to it. The program takes two forms: pupils from ZEP schools in Mauritius are brought to Odysseo Oceanarium in Port Louis for a guided visit and hands-on workshop, and, because Rodrigues has no aquarium or marine education facility, the Odysseo education team travels to the island to deliver the program in the schools themselves.

This proposal covers a single combined campaign reaching all 27 ZEP schools in Mauritius between October 2026 and May 2027, and all 23 schools in Rodrigues during a 15-day outreach mission in February 2027. The Rodrigues component also includes a beach cleanup, the distribution of sea books, and a Trash to Music activity and concert built from waste collected on the island.

At least 2,000 children are expected to be reached through this project.

Background of NGO

The Odysseo Marine Foundation is dedicated to protecting and restoring Mauritius’ marine ecosystems, driving projects that balance environmental sustainability with community engagement and education. Their work is grounded in community collaboration and the belief that small actions can create big waves of change.

Description of Project

The campaign has two components delivered by the same Odysseo education team.

Mauritius – Odysseo@ZEP Schools. Pupils from the 27 ZEP schools are brought to Odysseo Oceanarium in Port Louis. Each school group receives bus transport, entrance to the oceanarium, a guided visit built around Mauritian marine ecosystems, a hands-on workshop with activity materials, and a meal. The campaign runs across October to May school window.

Rodrigues – Odysseo@Schools Rodrigues. The education team travels to Rodrigues for a 15-day mission covering all 23 schools on the island. The program is delivered to the classrooms with portable materials. The mission also includes a beach cleanup with pupils, the distribution of sea books that stays with the schools, and an activity created by our partner Trash to Music in which children make instruments from collected waste, closing with a public concert during the beach cleanup activity.

Both components use the same pedagogical content, adapted to local context, so that results across the two islands are comparable. The project does not involve any construction.

Objectives of the Project

Deliver the Odysseo@Schools programme to all 27 ZEP schools in Mauritius within the October to May campaign window.
Deliver the Odysseo@Schools programme to all 23 schools in Rodrigues during a single 15-day outreach mission.
Reach at least 2,000 children across the two islands with a guided visit or classroom workshop, with a gender equity target of 50% girls.
Deliver one beach cleanup activity and concert in Rodrigues and leave sea books in every school visited.

Budget Clarification

The total budget for 27 ZEP schools in Mauritius is Rs1,336,939, representing a cost of Rs49,516 per school. Funders may choose to support one school or multiple schools in Mauritius.

The total budget for 23 schools in Rodrigues is Rs1,311,940, representing a cost of Rs219,660 per school, this include travel and acomodation for the Odysseo education team. The project is implemented as a single mission covering all schools on the island. As a result, sponsorship is generally considered for the Rodrigues project as a whole rather than on a school-by-school basis.

The total budget of the project (Mauritius and Rodrigues), with I61 Foundation facilitation is Rs2,913,768.
