UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Project Overview
Women in vulnerable communities often possess valuable practical skills but lack the resources, space, and support to transform these abilities into sustainable income-generating activities. In L’Escalier, a group of women modists ‘Aiguille d’Or’ already possess sewing skills and have demonstrated strong motivation to develop a small business offering mending services, tailormade clothing, and handmade accessories. However, the absence of adequate workspace, professional equipment, and structured business support prevents them from developing their activity.
Description of Project
This project proposes the creation of a community sewing hub at L’Escalier Nou Tou Ansam, where these women will be provided with a renovated workspace, professional sewing equipment, training, and marketing support to establish a small social enterprise. Beyond income generation, the initiative will also become a training space where other women from the community can learn sewing skills, thereby multiplying the project’s impact. The project contributes to women’s economic empowerment, community development, and local entrepreneurship.
Objectives of the Project
- Provide a renovated and equipped workspace for women entrepreneurs.
- Strengthen women’s income-generating activities through sewing services.
- Provide business, marketing, and technical training to improve sustainability.
- Develop a local service for clothing repairs, tailoring, and accessories.
- Create a training platform where women can teach sewing skills to other women in the community.
Expected Impact
- A sustainable community enterprise providing access to economic opportunities, vocational training, and local services while strengthening the capacity of the community centre as a hub for empowerment and social inclusion.
- Increased household income, improved financial resilience, and reduced economic vulnerability for women and their families, contributing to poverty reduction and enhanced quality of life.
- Women develop the confidence, knowledge, and capacity to manage successful micro-enterprises, make informed financial decisions, and pursue long-term economic opportunities.
- Expanded access to vocational skills within the community, creating a multiplier effect by increasing employability, entrepreneurship, and opportunities for economic participation among women.
- Greater self-reliance, enhanced decision-making power within households and communities, improved self-esteem, and increased participation of women in local economic and community development initiatives.
