Project Overview

Many children attending the Sunkids Afterschool Programme face challenges with personal hygiene. Some come in the same clothes every day, others are unable to wash their hair regularly, and several struggle with dental issues. These situations often lead to illness, frequent absences, and in some cases, social difficulties. For many families, financial hardship makes it difficult to afford hygiene essentials, as basic food needs take priority in the household budget. To support these children, the project provided each child with a hygiene kit helping reduce illness, supporting their well‑being, and easing the financial pressure on families by covering part of the cost of personal care items.

Background of NPO

Ti Rayons Soleil, an NGO created in 2007 in Mauritius, helps children and vulnerable people living in pockets of poverty. The final goal of community development projects is the fight against poverty and exclusion through training, “Empowerment”, educational, nutritional, medical and para-medical support. The supervision of people in the programs makes it possible to create a social bond and thus, to counter exclusion.

Ti Rayons Soleil identifies within pockets of poverty, children who have unmet basic needs and are deprived of basic care. Then our teams intervene on the educational, nutritional, medical and psychological level.

Description of Project

The project provided age‑appropriate hygiene kits to 42 children. Each kit included essentials such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and basic grooming items. Ti Rayons Soleil’s nurse also led practical sessions to teach the children how to care for their teeth, bath properly, and maintain simple grooming habits. These sessions supported healthier daily routines and encouraged greater confidence and engagement.

Project Impact
  • Educators, the social worker, and the nurse worked together to identify the most urgent hygiene items for the kits.
  • Regular health checks were carried out to understand each child’s needs and guide follow‑up.
  • Full funding was secured, covering all costs linked to the hygiene kits.
  • 42 children received age‑appropriate hygiene kits with essential personal care items.
  • The nurse led practical sessions on oral care, bathing, and grooming, helping children build simple daily routines.
  • The kits were distributed in December 2025 during a Christmas activity, creating a warm and joyful moment.
  • Children showed better comfort and confidence, and attendance improved.
  • Families benefited from reduced expenses for basic hygiene products.
