Project Overview
Baie du Cap, a small coastal village, is isolated from other villages or towns. It is not serviced by a local vegetable market or supermarket, so fresh vegetables are not readily available. There is a high dependence on imported produce and residents are forced to travel far for their groceries.
Inspired by the model of Réunion-based association ACEPI, the Anbalaba Foundation aims to create an ecological community and many family gardens on a 1,350 m² plot in Domaine d’Anbalaba in Baie du Cap.
20 families will cultivate 50 m² plots (10m x 5m) using natural farming methods (no chemical fertilizers or pesticides).
The budget covers the materials and equipment to carry out activities, staff to help run the program, daily operating costs, and any unexpected expenses.
Description of Project
Residents have limited knowledge of ecological agriculture and rely on vegetables grown with harmful pesticides, leading to health problems. Many families cannot afford organic produce from distant supermarkets, which is often expensive and not truly pesticide-free. By establishing community gardens, the project will:
- Provide access to fresh, organic vegetables at no extra cost
- Reduce pesticide-related illnesses by promoting chemical-free farming methods
- Improve food security by enabling families to grow their own nutritious vegetables
Many residents have no prior experience in sustainable agriculture. The project will:
- Train families in organic farming techniques (composting, natural pest control)
- Encourage self-sufficiency by allocating individual plots (50 m² per family)
- Promote income generation through surplus vegetable production
- Providing a place for participants to meet, exchange ideas and build a strong network around a healthy lifestyle
The community garden will serve as a shared space for social interaction, combating isolation. Additionally:
- Educational workshops will teach children and adults about eco-friendly practices
- Retirees and volunteers will supervise, fostering intergenerational knowledge sharing
Objectives of the Project
Develop 20 plots to be cultivated by 20 residents/families from Baie du Cap at Domaine d’Anbalaba. The gardens will enable 20 families to:
- Grow their own organic vegetables for food self-sufficiency
- Build social connections through a collective, caring project
- Raise environmental awareness, especially among children, via educational workshops
- Sell their produce at Anbala boutik or to local vendors
- Reduce reliance on expensive, non-organic vegetables in supermarket
- Empower the community to become autonomous through ecological farming
Anbalaba Foundation aims to demonstrate that an eco-friendly, community-driven alternative is possible. This model could expand to other villages to promote self-reliance, health, and environmental protection.
