Project Summary

Wise Eye Mauritius will be providing vision screening to the children who are beneficiaries of Bonheur Associé aux Enfants. Those children requiring further intervention after the screening will be transported to a predetermined optometrist and further treatment and glasses provided. Funding has been graciously provided by an I61 Foundation Funding Partner. 40 children will be taking part in this program.

Description of Project

The Wise Eye Vision Screening Project aims to address this gap by providing accessible and efficient vision screenings to children in Mauritius using the state-of-theart Spot Vision Screener to conduct comprehensive vision screenings. This device utilizes advanced technology to detect a wide range of vision problems quickly and accurately, including:

  • Refractive Errors (e.g., nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism),
  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye),
  • Strabismus (Crossed Eyes),
  • Anisometropia (Significant Difference in Refractive Error between Eyes)

allowing for early intervention and treatment.

The Spot Vision Screener is a handheld portable device that helps users detect vision errors on patients as early as 6 months of age through to adults. It works by capturing a photo-refractive image of the eye in less than a minute, providing instant results in seconds via a detailed report. Should any visions problems be detected, the child will be referred to a predetermined optometrist or ophthalmologist for a complete eye test.

The objectives of the projects are to:

  1. Screen all the children who are beneficiaries at Bonheur Associé aux Enfants
  2. Identify those children requiring further intervention.
  3. Make appointments for these children and transport them to the optometrist
  4. Follow up with further treatment/glasses required

This initiative is in line with the Mauritian government’s program for education in Mauritius, which emphasizes the importance of ensuring equal access to quality education for all children. By investing in the visual health of Mauritian youth, we not only support the government’s objectives but also contribute to the holistic development of our nation’s future leaders.
