Project Overview

The primary goal of the Sun Kids Educational, Care and Development Program was to offer academic support for children aged 5 to 12 who have difficulties learning to read, or cannot even read or write. The sessions are held two  times a week and last an average of one hour. Afterwards, a hot meal is offered to the children.

In addition, they also offer educational, artistic and fun activities to help children counter academic struggles whilst inviting them to make discoveries and change their horizons. Sun Kids’ actions promote the moral and intellectual development of the children who attend their programs.

After more than 10 years running the SunKids Educational, Care and Development Program in Black River, the kitchen was in need of renovation to ensure it met the standards of the Ministry of Health.  It was also essential for the preparation of meals for the children to be made in a safe and hygienic environment. The tiles, kitchen fittings, oven and extractor fan needed to be replaced.

This kitchen is used to prepare meals for three of Ti Rayons Soleil’s projects in the area:

  • 45 children fed from Monday to Wednesday for the After School Project at the Sun Kids site
  • 32 children fed every day at Paille en Queue Pre-primary School
  • 20 youth fed 2 days per week from the Youth Empowerment Project on Thursdays and Fridays at the Sun Kids site
Description of Project

Ti Rayons Soleil, who runs these programs, aims to help and accompany the children with different types of support and one of the most important is the food support. Preparing meals in a safe and hygienic environment is essential for a healthy and nutritional outcome.

The kitchen has been creating meals for children for more than 10 years without major renovation. The outdated equipment was replaced, the surface and cupboards redone and the broken tiles replaced with a brand new floor.  The walls have also been covered with a stainless steel splashback and an extractor fan installed. All of these renovations mean that Sun Kids now has a fully functional kitchen ensuring that the preparation of meals takes place in a good envirnement and meets the Ministry of Health standards.
