UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
Project Overview
This project aims to upgrade the infrastructure of the Plaine Lievre (Camp)/Pétrin Field Station, located within the Upper Black River Gorges National Park, to support the bird conservation program ran by Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF). The focus is on improving the roof structure, photovoltaic system, and electrical installations to enhance the safety, welfare, and operational efficiency of staff working in this remote conservation area.
Through the generosity of corporate funders, MWF is currently upgrading Camp’s photovoltaic system at the cost of Rs 834,500, as well as the upgrading of the electrical installation at the cost of Rs 169,265. MWF is seeking further funding to repair the rusted sheets of corrugated iron that make up the roof of the camp.
Description of Project
Plaine Lievre Field Station (Camp)/Petrin Field Station is one of the remote operation bases where MWF staff stay during the week. The field station plays a pivotal role in the conservation of endangered endemic bird species, particularly the Echo Parakeet and the Pink Pigeon.
It is essential for staff safety and welfare that the Field Station is fully equipped with amenities such as rainwater collection, solar hot water and photovoltaic systems as well as proper electrical and plumbing installations, kitchen, bedrooms, workstations and field gear.
Field Stations are owned by the Government of Mauritius, with MWF staff authorised to equip and use them with the approval of the National Parks and Conservation Service. (NPCS)
MWF runs 6 field stations across Mauritius.
Before installing the upgraded photovoltaic system it is imperative that the rusted sheets of corrugated iron that make up the roof, are replaced to ensure longevity of the system and safety of the staff.
Objectives of the Project
- Roof Rehabilitation: Replace or reinforce the existing roof to ensure structural integrity and weather resistance.
- Solar Power Upgrade: Upgrade the photovoltaic system to provide reliable, sustainable energy for daily operations.
- Electrical Safety Improvements: Modernize the electrical system to meet safety standards and support essential equipment.
