Sail Shade Project

UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Date Initiated:

July 2024

Focus:

Social Justice

Funds Raised:

₨23,275

NPO:

Not A Number

Project Overview

The project involved the installation of a 3m x 4m shade sail at the Petit Verger Prison Visitor Centre to improve comfort and provide a shaded outdoor waiting area for families of detainees. Through this improvement the number of visiting families increased resulting in greater response to treatment.

Background of NPO

Not A Number, a ‘for-impact’ organisation, works towards the creation of safer communities by harnessing the innate potential of all people to better themselves and become positive influences on their world. Their aim is to contribute towards a future where people are less burdened by crime, with fewer victims, and a genuine system of justice. They shine a light on the faceless ‘numbers’ that overwhelm our justice system – the endless list of victims of crime as well as those perpetrators lost in the cycle of criminality.

Description of Project

With the generous support of the funder, we were able to purchase the sail (3m x 4m) and pay for the installation which bypassed many potential challenges in arranging this to be done by the prison service itself.

Project Impact
  • Installation of shade sail completed
  • Visual improvement of the centre achieved
  • Outdoor area now more welcoming and functional
  • Increase in number of family visits
  • Improvement in detainee relationships with family and behaviour.
