MOL Charitable Trust
In the wake of the Wakashio oil spill off the southeast coast of Mauritius on 25 July 2020, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) established two initiatives as part of an ongoing commitment to support the environment and people of Mauritius in 2021.
One of which is the MOL Charitable Trust (MCT), a locally-based initiative, which allocates funding to short-term projects, typically less than one year. The Trust is managed locally in Mauritius and targets smaller and more niche projects, with strong local connections and are selected based on alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Projects and activities receive support of up to 1 million Mauritian Rupee per project, which is contributed solely by MOL. Projects are selected by the Trust’s enforcers committee. MOL’s contribution is 300 million yen over 5 years.

Collaboration with I61 Foundation
Since June 2021, I61 Foundation has been supporting MCT in their Call for Proposals (CFPs) by screening projects, and the nonprofit organisations (NPOs) running them. Once project selection has been made we ensure protocol is followed in the rolling out of the projects through quarterly monitoring and evaluation, providing support in whichever way is required to MCT and the NPOs. A final report is then provided to MCT reviewing the impact and outcomes of each of the projects.
Annual Call for Proposal (CFP) Reports
Three years of MOL’s contribution to the society and environment of Mauritius has been completed.
Below are the reports for CFP 1, 2 and 3. CFP 4 is currently underway. And in 2026 the last call will be rolled out.
It is an honour and a privilege for I61 Foundation to play a part in the MOL Charitable Trust’s endeavours to support our beautiful island and restore, renew and rebuild the affected communities and environment.
