Project Overview
In order for a child with special needs to function autonomously as they grow up, they must learn basic life skills such as cooking and being creative with their hands. This project focused on both these critical areas in their development.
Throughout the 8 years that I Can Special Needs School has been offering its services to children with special needs, it has found that some children reach their academic plateau and exhibit many shortcomings in basic life skills. Therefore, a functional unit was set up at the school in July 2021.
The main aim of this functional unit is to help special needs students become autonomous in different aspects of life and eventually creating opportunities for possible job prospects. Students’ strengths and weaknesses have been observed and a curriculum has been designed to address their needs. The targeted areas of teaching are:
- Basic life skills
- Arts and crafts
- Mathematics (functional)
- Cooking
- Gardening
Funds were raised to purchase equipment for the kitchen and materials for arts and crafts
